Dennis's Story
After high school I went to Fresno City to get my AA. Then I tranfered to Fresno State for my BA. I started in the Master's program, but a divorce and the desire to be done with school saw me leaving before completing the process. I did publish my Master's Thesis on the feeding habits of the local Mule Deer population. I worked for PG&E as a biological consultant on the Helms Creek Project and then went to work for the Fresno County Agricultural Department as an inspector. Unfortunately Proposition 13 passed and they needed to cut one position. Being the last person hired meant that I was the first to go. I did some part-time work for CDFA and then found a job with the Tulare County Agricultural Commissioner's Office. That was 32 years ago. I've been the Staff Biologist for the County now for many years, and enjoy being able to help the public and the industry with their questions related to pests and hort...Expand for more
icultural practices. For the past few years I've also been helping out with Kings and Kern Counties, so I remain very busy with work. My counterpart in Fresno County retired last fall so now I answer questions for the public about insect for that county too.
I've been married twice (both ended in divorce) and have a step-daughter and a son. Both are grown and enjoying life. My daughter has three lovely children (a girl and two boys). I'm single and enjoying doing my own thing these days. After trying to deal with two difficult marriages and worrying about how to get through them, I'm finally just living for myself.
When I'm not at work looking at insects, I'm out running around the area looking for new insects. I've managed to find 50-60 species new to science during my career, and have 5 insects and a spider named after me. I've enjoyed my life in biology and hope to continue on for many years to come.
